The most precise tool in orthodontics – when aligners are not enough. Fixed braces correct even the most complex irregularities of the teeth and the bite: brackets are bonded to the teeth and an archwire guides them into the correct position, millimetre by millimetre, under constant supervision. On this page we explain the types of fixed braces, what treatment looks like and how to choose between a fixed appliance and clear aligners.
When are fixed braces the right choice?
Clear aligners handle milder and moderate irregularities very well, but with pronounced crowding, large rotations, a deep bite, significant spacing and problems with the bite itself, fixed braces remain the more precise and predictable tool. In children and teenagers, where the discipline of wearing aligners cannot be guaranteed, a fixed appliance works 24 hours a day – no exceptions.
Types of fixed braces
- Metal brackets – the classic, most durable and most affordable choice; modern ones are considerably smaller and more comfortable than the old ones.
- Ceramic (aesthetic) brackets – tooth-coloured, less noticeable in conversation and in photographs.
- Sapphire brackets – transparent, the most discreet among fixed solutions.
- Self-ligating brackets – without elastic ligatures, with less friction and potentially shorter check-ups.
What does treatment look like?
- Examination and analysis – examination, bite analysis and, where needed, an orthopantomogram or 3D diagnostics; a treatment plan.
- Preparation – before the brackets are bonded, the teeth must be healthy: treatment of any cavities and a professional cleaning.
- Bonding – the brackets are bonded painlessly, in a single visit of about an hour.
- Adjustments – regular check-ups every few weeks, with changes of the archwire that moves the teeth.
- Retention – after the appliance is removed, a retainer is worn (an inner wire and/or a night-time aligner) that protects the result.
How long does treatment take?
On average 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case; simpler cases finish sooner. Unlike aligners, with a fixed appliance progress does not depend on your discipline – the appliance works continuously. Mild pressure in the first days after every adjustment is a normal sign that the teeth are moving.
Hygiene with braces
Braces ask for a little more care: brushing after every meal, interdental brushes and, where needed, a water flosser, while avoiding sticky and hard food that can break a bracket off. With good maintenance, treatment passes without cavities and marks on the enamel – that part is also the job of our preventive dentistry.
How much do fixed braces cost?
The price depends on the type of brackets and the estimated duration of treatment, so the exact price is given at the examination together with the treatment plan. See also the dental price list. Payment is possible in cash and by Visa, Mastercard and DinaCard cards.
Fixed braces or aligners?
At the examination we assess the irregularity and the bite and honestly tell you what is more effective for your case: for milder irregularities in adults, aligners often win because of their discretion; for more complex ones, fixed braces. The wish for aesthetics, habits and wearing discipline also count in the decision.

Frequently asked questions
Does fitting braces hurt?
No – the bonding is painless. Mild pressure and cheek irritation are normal in the first days after fitting and after every adjustment.
How often are check-ups?
Most often every four to eight weeks, depending on the phase of treatment and the type of appliance.
Can adults wear fixed braces?
Yes – orthodontic treatment has no upper age limit while the teeth and gums are healthy. More and more adults are straightening their teeth in their thirties, forties and later.
What if a bracket breaks off?
Contact the practice – the bracket is bonded again. Until then, take care that the wire does not poke; the small wax you receive from us solves the discomfort until you come in.
Can I choose between metal and aesthetic brackets?
Yes – at the examination we go through the differences in price, appearance and durability, and you choose what suits you better.
Is retention mandatory after removal?
Yes – without retention the teeth tend to move back. The standard is a fixed inner wire and/or a night-time retainer aligner.
