Neck wrinkles at a glance
- What they are: horizontal grooves and laxity of the neck skin – the neck ages faster than the face because its skin is thinner and less supported
- Causes: loss of collagen and elastin, looking down at a phone („tech neck“), sun exposure, genetics and platysma laxity
- Treatments: skin booster/biorevitalisation for skin quality, botox in the platysma for visible bands, mesotherapy, microneedling and laser rejuvenation
- Care: treat the neck as an extension of the face – cleansing, hydration and SPF are essential here too
- Results: gradual, best in a treatment series adapted to skin thickness and the severity of the lines
Why does the neck age faster?
Neck skin is thin and has fewer sebaceous glands than the face, so it loses hydration and elasticity sooner. The platysma is a broad, thin muscle with limited support beneath it, so gravity leaves its mark more quickly. Added to this are the head-down posture used with phones („tech neck“), sun exposure and genetics – which is why neck lines often look older than the face.
Types of neck wrinkles
Horizontal grooves are formed by neck flexion and loss of elasticity, and deepen with age. Vertical bands are the visible edges of the platysma that appear with contraction. The third group is fine surface lines and „crepey“ texture, a sign of lost collagen and hydration. Often all three are present, so treatment targets what predominates.
Which treatments help?
Skin booster and biorevitalisation hydrate and strengthen thin neck skin, while mesotherapy and microneedling stimulate collagen. For pronounced platysmal bands, botox relaxes their edges and softens the vertical cords. Laser rejuvenation can improve skin texture and tightness, especially combined with injectable treatments.
Care and prevention
The neck should be cared for as an extension of the face: gentle cleansing, hydration, anti-age active ingredients as needed and daily SPF. Posture and less downward phone use reduce skin folding.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cream remove neck wrinkles?
A cream improves hydration and fine surface lines, but deeper grooves and platysmal bands require in-clinic treatment.
How many treatments are needed?
Usually a series of several treatments a few weeks apart, with maintenance. The plan depends on skin thickness and the severity of the lines.
Does neck botox affect swallowing?
A properly measured dose in the platysma is used in aesthetic practice and does not interfere with swallowing; the aim is to relax superficial bands, not functional muscles.
