Cellulite at a glance

  • The concern: an uneven, „orange-peel“ texture of the skin on the thighs, glutes, abdomen and upper arms
  • Most common causes: the structure of the subcutaneous connective tissue and fat cells, hormones (oestrogen), circulation, genetics and lifestyle – not body weight alone
  • Treatments at ESTERA: lymphatic drainage and mesotherapy of problem zones
  • Important: around 90% of women have cellulite regardless of weight; the best results are achieved with a course of treatments and a plan tailored to the appropriate stage

What is cellulite and why does it form?

Cellulite forms when fat cells push through the subcutaneous connective tissue, giving the skin’s surface its characteristic dimples and irregularities, known as „orange peel“. In women, the fat layer and the connective strands are arranged vertically, so the protrusions are more visible, while in men the structure is criss-crossed – which is why cellulite is rarely pronounced in them.

Research shows that around 90% of women have cellulite regardless of body weight. Its appearance is also influenced by hormones such as oestrogen, insulin and noradrenaline, circulation, genetic factors, and habits – industrially processed food, alcohol, smoking, irregular sleep and a lack of physical activity. That is why the approach to cellulite cannot be purely aesthetic; it has to be systematic.

The stages of cellulite: why do they matter?

To choose the right treatment, cellulite is divided into stages according to the standard Pinch test, in which the skin of the outer thigh is „pinched“ between thumb and forefinger:

  • Stage 0 – no visible „orange peel“, even under pressure;
  • Stage 1 – cellulite is noticeable only under pressure;
  • Stage 2 – visible when standing, but not when lying down;
  • Stage 3 – evident even when lying down;
  • Stage 4 – alongside the visible changes, pain is also present.

The stage determines the choice and intensity of treatment, as well as realistic expectations of the result.

Which treatments help?

  • Lymphatic drainage – support for circulation and the elimination of retained fluid, often combined with device-based programmes;
  • Mesotherapy – targeted application of cocktails to problem zones, such as the thighs, within a broader protocol.

What does a treatment plan look like?

At the examination we determine the stage of the cellulite and the dominant factors – fat deposits, fluid retention, skin quality – and then combine device-based and injectable methods. Results build over a course of treatments, and their maintenance is supported by physical activity, hydration and a stable body weight.

Frequently asked questions about cellulite

Do only people with extra weight have cellulite?

No. Around 90% of women have cellulite regardless of body weight, because its appearance is most influenced by the structure of the connective tissue, hormones and circulation – slim women are not exempt.

Can cellulite be removed completely?

Cellulite is a chronic phenomenon tied to the structure of the tissue, so the realistic goal is set as a significant softening of the irregularities and circumference, with maintenance of the result – not complete and permanent removal.

How many treatments do I need?

It depends on the stage and the chosen programme; device-based and combined protocols are planned as a course of treatments. An estimate is given at the examination, after the Pinch test.

Do cellulite treatments hurt?

Treatments such as lymphatic drainage are painless and require no recovery. Mesotherapy is an injectable treatment and may cause mild discomfort and temporary bruising.
