Scars: why do they form and what do they look like?

A scar forms as part of the skin’s natural healing after injury. The most common causes are acne, wounds and surgical procedures. By appearance, a distinction is made between atrophic scars – depressions in the skin typical of acne – and hypertrophic scars, which sit raised above the skin’s surface. Keloids, which grow beyond the boundaries of the original injury, require a separate and often combined approach and are assessed individually.

Acne scars are among the most common reasons for laser treatment – read more on the page about acne scars.

How does the laser act on a scar?

In laser resurfacing, the erbium laser precisely removes the damaged surface layer of the skin, layer by layer. At the same time, controlled heat in the deeper layers stimulates fibroblasts to increase collagen production, so over the following weeks and months the scar gradually remodels and blends with the surrounding skin. Healthy skin from the margins rapidly repairs the treated zone.

For acne scars, laser treatment is often built into a wider protocol that may include other methods – see the section on combined treatments.

What does the treatment involve?

At the examination, the type, depth and age of the scar are assessed and a protocol is chosen. An anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand where needed. As the laser passes over the skin you feel warmth and stinging; the treatment itself takes around 15-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area.

Who is it for, and when is it postponed?

The treatment is intended for people with stabilised acne and healed scars, with realistic expectations. Active inflammatory lesions in the area should be treated first. The treatment is postponed in the case of herpes or another infection in the area, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, on freshly tanned skin, and during isotretinoin therapy – tell the doctor about all medicines you take.

Recovery and aftercare

After treatment the skin is red and sensitive, and fine scabs form over the following days and lift off on their own – do not pick them. Regular high-factor sun protection is essential while the skin heals, as is avoiding the sun, saunas and sunbeds. The depth of treatment determines the length of recovery, so recommendations are given individually.

Combination with other treatments

The best results for acne scars are often achieved by combining methods. Laser protocols can, at the doctor’s assessment, be combined with MicroNeedling, which further stimulates collagen renewal, and with PRP treatment. The combination plan and the order of treatments are set at the examination, according to the type of scar and the condition of the skin.

How much does laser scar removal cost?

The price depends on the size of the area, the number and type of scars and the planned protocol. See our treatment price list for current prices; the exact estimate is given at the examination.

Frequently asked questions about laser scar removal

Is the treatment painful?

An anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand where needed, so the procedure is well tolerated; warmth and stinging are felt.

Can a scar disappear completely?

The goal of treatment is a significant softening and blending of the scar with the surrounding skin, with realistic expectations. How much a scar improves depends on its type, depth and age.

How many treatments are needed?

Individually; most often a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart, with the estimate given at the examination.

When is the result visible?

The first improvement is seen once the skin has healed, and as new collagen is built the appearance of the scar continues to improve over the following months.

Can laser scar removal be done in summer?

Treatment is best planned outside periods of intense sun exposure; high-factor sun protection is essential afterwards.
