SPF protection in short

  • Meaning: SPF (sun protection factor) shows how much a product reduces the effect of UVB radiation on the skin
  • How much: broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 for the face every day; strictly SPF 50 after treatments and in strong sun
  • How: a generous amount as the last step of the morning routine, reapplied roughly every 2 hours outdoors
  • All year round: UVA radiation passes through clouds and glass – protection is not only for summer
  • Plan: we match the choice of SPF to your skin type and planned treatments at the examination

What does SPF mean?

SPF measures protection against UVB radiation – the kind that causes redness and sunburn. It is determined by comparing the time until redness appears on protected and unprotected skin. In theory, SPF 30 means the skin tolerates 30 times longer exposure before reddening than it would without protection.

In practice, protection depends on the amount applied, the UV index, sweating, swimming and towel-drying – so SPF should be read as a guideline, and the cream applied generously and reapplied regularly.

An important distinction: SPF refers to UVB radiation. UVA radiation does not cause sunburn, but it penetrates deeper and is the main driver of photoageing, wrinkles and pigmentation – and it passes through clouds and glass. That is why we recommend broad-spectrum products (UVA+UVB protection), which is marked separately on the packaging.

How much protection is enough?

Properly applied, SPF 30 filters about 97% of UVB radiation and SPF 50 about 98%. The difference looks small, but for fair, sensitive or post-treatment skin those few per cent matter – especially since cream is rarely applied in the full amount in real life.

  • Everyday city protection: SPF 30-50, all year round
  • Longer time outdoors, beach, mountains: SPF 50, plus a hat, sunglasses and shade
  • After peels, MicroNeedling and laser treatments: strictly SPF 50, avoiding direct sun

No product provides complete protection. Sunscreen is one step – alongside clothing, shade and avoiding the strongest sun between 11 am and 4 pm.

Correct application

The most common mistake is too small an amount: it drops the real protection well below the factor stated on the packaging.

  • Amount: for the face and neck, roughly two finger-lengths of cream (about half a teaspoon)
  • Timing: apply 15-30 minutes before going out, so the film can form
  • Reapplication: roughly every 2 hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming, heavier sweating or towel-drying
  • Commonly missed areas: ears, neck, the crown if exposed, and the backs of the hands
  • Order: in the morning routine SPF comes last – after moisturiser, before make-up. We describe the full routine on the daily anti-age skincare page.

Make-up with SPF does not replace sunscreen, because it is not applied in a sufficient amount. Tinted SPF creams are a practical everyday compromise – light coverage with protection – but only if an adequate amount is applied; for the beach and longer time outdoors, dedicated protection is needed.

SPF and treatments

UV radiation is the main external factor in skin ageing and the fastest way to diminish the result of a treatment. After peels, MicroNeedling and laser treatments the skin is temporarily more sun-sensitive and more prone to pigmentation – SPF 50 is then mandatory every day, with a hat and as much avoidance of direct sun as possible, until full recovery.

Frequently asked questions about SPF

Do I need SPF when it is cloudy?

Yes. UVA radiation passes through clouds and glass, ageing the skin on cloudy and winter days too. Facial protection is a daily, year-round step, not a summer extra.

Is make-up with SPF enough protection?

No. To match the stated factor, a product must be applied generously – and nobody applies make-up in that quantity. The SPF step stays separate, under make-up.

What is the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50?

SPF 30 filters about 97% and SPF 50 about 98% of UVB radiation. Properly applied SPF 30 is enough for everyday city protection; for strong sun, fair or sensitive skin and the period after treatments we recommend SPF 50.

Which SPF after a treatment?

Strictly SPF 50, every day until full recovery, avoiding direct sun. The exact period depends on the treatment and is given in your aftercare recommendation.
