Rosacea and capillaries at a glance

  • The concern: broken, visible capillaries on the face (telangiectasias), persistent redness of the cheeks, nose and chin, and with rosacea also inflammatory, pronounced changes
  • Most common causes: genetic predisposition, fragile capillary walls, UV damage, hormones, temperature changes and other triggers
  • Treatments at ESTERA: Nd:YAG laser correction of capillaries (priced per zone), tailored care and avoidance of triggers
  • Important: rosacea is a chronic condition that is kept under control; with active inflammation the skin is calmed first, and work on the capillaries follows

What are broken capillaries, and what is rosacea?

Broken capillaries (telangiectasias) are small red or purplish „spider veins“ and lines on the sides of the nose, the cheeks and the chin – blood vessels that have permanently widened and become visible through the skin. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that, alongside redness, can also bring stinging, a feeling of heat and, in more severe stages, inflammatory bumps – and broken capillaries are a common part of that picture.

It is important to tell them apart: individual capillaries are primarily an aesthetic concern that is corrected with a laser, while rosacea requires careful management of the skin and avoidance of triggers.

Why do capillaries become visible?

In some people the walls of the capillaries are hereditarily more fragile and prone to permanent widening. Their appearance is accelerated and deepened by UV damage, frequent and sudden temperature changes, hot and spicy food, alcohol, stress and hormonal factors. With rosacea, inflammatory processes additionally burden the blood vessels of the face, so redness and capillaries can worsen over the years if the condition is not managed.

Which treatments help?

  • Nd:YAG laser correction of capillaries – targeted action on widened blood vessels: the laser energy selectively heats the blood in the vessel, so the vessel wall closes and the body gradually removes it. Treatment is priced per zone, according to the price list;
  • Tailored care for sensitive skin – non-irritating care and daily SPF protection slow the formation of new capillaries;
  • Managing rosacea – with active inflammation, the skin is calmed and triggers removed first; work on the capillaries is done once the skin is stable.

What does a treatment plan look like?

At the examination we map the areas and assess whether the skin is in a calm phase. Laser correction of capillaries is usually planned in one to several treatments, depending on the number and calibre of the vessels. Temporary redness or mild swelling is possible after treatment, and sun protection is mandatory. With rosacea, the plan also includes rules for care and avoidance of personal triggers, so that newly widened capillaries appear less often.

Frequently asked questions about capillaries and rosacea

Can broken capillaries disappear on their own?

Permanently widened capillaries do not recede on their own – once widened, they remain visible until they are treated. Laser correction is the standard method for removing them.

Is laser treatment of capillaries painful?

The sensation is usually described as a brief, mild stinging. Most patients tolerate the treatment well without anaesthesia; temporary redness or mild swelling is possible afterwards.

How many treatments do I need?

Smaller capillaries are often resolved in one to two treatments, while more numerous or larger vessels may require a course. An estimate is given at the examination.

Will the capillaries come back?

Treated vessels close permanently, but new capillaries can form if a predisposition and triggers are present. That is why sun protection and avoiding triggers are part of the long-term plan.
