The most natural-looking whitening does not happen in one afternoon – it happens gradually, night after night, while the gel works as you sleep or relax. Home whitening with custom trays combines the comfort of home with the safety of the dental office: trays are made exactly to your teeth, and the gel strength and wearing schedule are set by your dentist. The result is more even, sensitivity is lower, and control is complete. Book a consultation
At-home whitening at a glance
- What it is: gradual whitening at home with custom trays and professional gel.
- Trays: made from a 3D scan – the gel stays on the tooth, not the gum.
- Course: usually 10-14 days of wear.
- Supervision: exam before starting and a result check-up.
- Maintenance: keep the trays, refill only the gel.
- Price: a price-list item – scope confirmed at the exam.
How does home whitening with trays work?
You receive clear trays made from a 3D scan of your jaws and a professional carbamide-peroxide gel. The gel is applied into the tray, which is worn as instructed – from a few hours in the evening to overnight, usually for 10-14 days. Active oxygen passes through the enamel and breaks down stains from within, so teeth lighten gradually and evenly, without an artificial look.
Why custom trays instead of universal strips?
Universal strips and drugstore trays do not fit your teeth – gel leaks onto the gums, irritates them, and the result is uneven. A custom tray keeps the gel exactly where it belongs: on the tooth, not on the gum. That is why less gel gives a better result with far less sensitivity.
Home or laser whitening – how to choose?
Both methods work very well – the question is pace and goal. Laser whitening delivers the fastest result in a single visit, while home whitening with trays goes gradually, the shade is easy to control, and it is excellent for sensitive teeth and for maintaining results. Many patients combine them: a laser start, trays for maintenance.
What does the protocol look like?
- Exam and assessment – we check the health of teeth and gums; cavities and inflammation are treated first.
- Cleaning and polishing – tartar and surface stains are removed so the gel works evenly.
- 3D scan and tray fabrication – no unpleasant impressions.
- Delivery and instructions – gel amount, wearing time, what to avoid (coffee, wine, smoking during therapy).
- Check-up – after 1-2 weeks we evaluate the result and extend if needed.
Sensitivity and safety
Professional take-home gels have lower concentrations than in-office ones, so they are well tolerated. Temporary sensitivity is possible but uncommon, and it is easily managed with a day or two of pause and toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Systematic reviews show that at-home whitening with 10% carbamide peroxide is effective and safe, with less sensitivity than higher concentrations. Enamel is not damaged when the gel is used as instructed.
How long do results last and how are they maintained?
With normal hygiene and moderate intake of coffee, wine and tobacco, results last for years, and long-term studies show good shade retention. The advantage of custom trays: you keep them, and to refresh the shade you only need a refill of gel – no new treatment from scratch.
Price
At-home whitening of both jaws is already an item on our dental price list; the exact price and scope are confirmed at the exam.
Frequently asked questions
Does whitening damage the teeth?
No – when professional gels are used in recommended concentrations and as instructed, the enamel remains intact, as confirmed by clinical studies.
Do crowns, veneers and fillings whiten?
No – artificial materials do not change colour. If you have visible restorations on front teeth, we plan the whitening so everything matches.
How many shades lighter?
It depends on the starting colour, the type of staining and wearing discipline – at the exam we estimate a realistic goal for your smile.
Can pregnant women whiten?
Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding – it can safely wait, as it is not an urgent treatment.
