Scalp MicroNeedling: support for fuller, stronger hair

Srpski | Русский | Deutsch | Nederlands

If you have noticed more hair on your brush, a thinner strand, or a parting that looks wider than it used to – acting early gives you the most options. Scalp MicroNeedling is a gentle treatment that nudges the scalp back into renewal mode and helps serums reach where they need to work. It is not a magic wand and we promise no miracles – but in the right plan, for the right person, it makes a measurable contribution.

Scalp MicroNeedling at a glance

  • Concern: thinning, finer and weaker hair, a generally „tired“ scalp
  • How it works: fine micro-channels in the scalp trigger renewal and better circulation, and let the serum penetrate deeper
  • Serums: PDRN (polynucleotides) or exosomes, chosen for your scalp’s condition
  • Course: usually 3-6 sessions, 2-4 weeks apart
  • Downtime: practically none; mild redness for a few hours
  • Important: the cause of hair loss is assessed first – not every hair loss responds the same way

What is scalp MicroNeedling and how does it work?

MicroNeedling uses fine, sterile needles to create microscopic channels in the surface layer of the skin. On the scalp this works in two ways: the controlled micro-injury switches on the skin’s natural repair process (better microcirculation and growth-factor release around the follicles), and the open micro-channels let a serum applied straight after the treatment reach far deeper than it would when simply spread on the skin.

The point of the treatment is not to „wake up“ follicles that disappeared long ago, but to support the ones that have slowed down and weakened. That is why we honestly assess who the treatment makes sense for – and who it does not.

Which serums are used?

The serums we apply through the micro-channels most often are:

  • PDRN / polynucleotides – molecules that support skin (and scalp) renewal and quality; more on our polynucleotides page.
  • Exosomes – exosome serums applied topically straight after MicroNeedling; more on the exosomes and MicroNeedling with exosomes pages.

The choice of serum depends on your scalp and your goal. It is also worth knowing what the evidence says: the strongest data for scalp MicroNeedling exist when it is used as an add-on to hair-loss therapy – in the best-known randomized study, MicroNeedling combined with standard therapy produced significantly better regrowth than therapy alone (Dhurat et al., 2013). Serums differ in the strength of their evidence, and we talk about that openly at the consultation.

Who is it for – and when does assessment come first?

We consider scalp MicroNeedling for earlier thinning, finer and weaker strands, and for people who want to support hair quality during or after other therapies. It also works well as part of a wider plan – at our clinic it is often combined with hair mesotherapy, PRP hair treatment or laser hair programmes (Fotona HAIRestart), because each method works through a different mechanism.

Limits matter: sudden or patchy hair loss, scalp changes (redness, scaling, pain) and any suspicion of a hormonal or systemic cause call for a medical assessment first – aesthetic treatments come after. If we judge that scalp MicroNeedling will not help you, we will tell you so openly.

What does the treatment look like at ESTERA?

After a consultation and scalp examination, the scalp is prepared and the device with fine needles is passed zone by zone. The sensation is a light prickling; most people find it very tolerable. The chosen serum is applied immediately afterwards. A session takes about 30-45 minutes, and you return to your normal activities right away.

How many sessions and when do results show?

Hair grows slowly, so results are measured in months, not days. We typically plan a course of 3-6 sessions, 2-4 weeks apart, with a review after the course. Most people notice the first changes (less shedding, a stronger strand) during the course, and the fuller picture only after a few months, once new hair has had time to strengthen. Honestly: results vary from person to person, and with active, long-standing hair loss a combination with doctor-prescribed therapy is a realistic part of the plan.

Recovery and aftercare

There is practically no downtime: the scalp may be mildly red and sensitive for a few hours. On the day itself avoid aggressive washing, saunas and strong sun on the scalp; postpone colouring and stronger chemical hair treatments for a few days (you receive exact guidance at your session). Home care plays a big role – see our guide to at-home hair and scalp care.

Price and your next step

The price depends on the chosen serum and the size of the area, so the plan and price are set at the consultation – you can see indicative treatment prices in our price list. The first step is booking an assessment, where we establish the cause of the thinning and whether scalp MicroNeedling is the right choice for you.

Frequently asked questions about scalp MicroNeedling

Does it hurt?

Most people feel only a light prickling. The needles are very fine and the depth on the scalp is shallow.

Can it be combined with PRP, mesotherapy or minoxidil?

Yes – combinations are common and are exactly what produced the best results in studies. We plan the schedule and order individually.

When will I see results?

First changes during the course; a realistic assessment after the course plus a few months, because hair grows slowly.

Is increased shedding at the start normal?

With treatments that stimulate growth, a temporary „reset“ of the cycle can occur – weaker hairs fall out so stronger ones can replace them. It passes, and we monitor it at check-ups.

Who is it not for?

Active scalp infection or inflammation, certain skin conditions, and untreated systemic causes of hair loss – those are addressed first.

Is it the same as a home dermaroller?

No. Home rollers are shallower and less controlled; medical MicroNeedling is performed sterile, at a controlled depth, with serums not intended for home use.
