Hair loss: when can laser treatment help?
Excessive hair loss has various causes – from inherited predisposition and hormonal changes to stress and childbirth. The first step is therefore always an assessment of the cause at the examination. Laser hair-growth treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that stimulates hair growth naturally, and it gives its best results as part of an individual protocol, often combined with mesotherapy or PRP treatment.
How does the Fotona laser act on hair growth?
The laser energy triggers an intercellular reaction in the scalp that increases blood supply, softens the inflammatory response and accelerates metabolic processes. Hair follicles then receive more oxygen and nutrients, so hair loss is reduced and the growth of new hair is encouraged.
HAIRestart: the science behind the treatment
The HAIRestart method is based on patented Fotona SMOOTH pulses that gently and controllably deliver laser light to the scalp tissue. Fotona SMOOTH operates at the optimal infrared Er:YAG wavelength (2.94 μm), which coincides with maximal absorption in the skin. The laser acts in a non-ablative manner – it produces precisely engineered, mild thermal pulses that heat the scalp in a safe and controlled way, without significant ablation of the epidermis. The overall effect is a gentle heating of the skin and an increased production of growth factors, which stimulates dormant hair follicles and promotes tissue regeneration and new hair growth.
Efficacy has been demonstrated in several clinical studies, with an absence of adverse effects: significant improvement of hair growth and increased hair density, as well as a stabilization of hair loss, were reported regardless of the androgenetic alopecia (AGA) grade, patient age or AGA duration. In one study (Day D. et al., 2021), patients’ blind evaluation indicated an improvement in hair quality in 93% of patients, not correlated with age or AGA grade. In other studies (Dekeyser B., 2019; Mercik G. et al., 2021), patients described a more elastic and less dry scalp, and thicker, more durable, healthier and denser hair than previously.
What does the treatment involve?
The treatment is painless – during the procedure you may feel a mild warmth and occasional tingling. It takes 15-30 minutes. Afterwards, temporary mild redness of the treated region and flaking of the skin may occur, resolving on their own. No downtime is needed.

Combined protocols
To accelerate the effects of laser therapy, the treatment can, at the doctor’s assessment, be combined with scalp mesotherapy or PRP treatment, with an individual protocol drawn up for each patient. The choice of combination depends on the cause and degree of hair loss, decided at the examination.
Results and number of treatments
Laser hair and scalp treatments improve the quality and shine of the hair, encourage its growth and contribute to scalp health. Results are gradual and build over a course: the recommended number of treatments is individual, most often 4-10, spaced 2-4 weeks apart. The result is first noticed as reduced shedding, and then as the growth of new hair.
How much does laser hair treatment cost?
See our treatment price list for current prices (Fotona HAIRestart®); the individual plan and estimated number of treatments are given at the consultation.

How many treatments are needed?

When are results visible?
Results are gradual and build over the course; reduced shedding is noticed first, followed by the growth of new hair.
Can laser treatment be combined with mesotherapy or PRP?
Yes; combined protocols are often recommended to accelerate the effects, and the plan is drawn up individually at the consultation.
