What is mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is an aesthetic procedure in which small amounts of active substances are delivered with fine needles into the middle layer of the skin – the mesoderm, after which the method is named. Instead of acting only on the surface, like creams and serums, the products are brought exactly to where the skin lacks moisture, nutrients and the stimulus for renewal.
What sets mesotherapy apart is the possibility of a completely individual approach: the composition of the cocktail, and the depth and technique of injection are chosen according to the condition of your skin, the area being treated and the goal of treatment. That is why mesotherapy has been a standard part of aesthetic medicine for decades, equally suitable for younger skin that needs hydration and prevention, and for mature skin seeking revitalisation.
How does mesotherapy work?
During treatment, a mesotherapy cocktail – a blend of active substances such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants – is introduced into the skin through fine, serial micro-injections. Hyaluronic acid binds water and contributes to skin hydration and tone, while vitamins and amino acids take part in the normal processes of skin cell renewal.
The micro-injection procedure itself additionally stimulates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms: local microcirculation and the activity of fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin. The advantage of needle delivery over other methods is precise dosing of the product, application at an exactly determined depth and less tissue trauma, with greater product utilisation.
What can be treated?
Mesotherapy is most often applied to the face, neck and décolletage, and is particularly suitable for delicate zones such as the forehead and the area around the eyes. Depending on the cocktail selected, treatment can contribute to:
- better hydration and a fresher appearance of tired, dehydrated skin;
- softening of fine lines and a more even skin tone;
- smoother texture and reduced visibility of enlarged pores;
- revitalisation of the skin after summer, sun exposure or periods of exhaustion.
On the body, mesotherapy is used within programmes for softening cellulite and stretch marks, most often on the thighs, abdomen and upper arms. What does the treatment involve?
Everything begins with a consultation: Dr Nenad Stanković assesses the condition of your skin, discusses your goals with you and selects the cocktail composition and application technique. Before treatment the skin is cleansed, and if needed a cream containing a local anaesthetic is applied for greater comfort.
The product is then delivered with fine needles into the planned area, with control of the depth, quantity and distribution of the injections. The treatment itself usually takes 20-40 minutes. Immediately afterwards the skin may be red and more sensitive to touch, which most often settles within a few hours to a couple of days.
Combinations with other treatments
At ESTERA, mesotherapy is often planned as part of a broader protocol. With MicroNeedling (Dermapen) it allows active substances to be delivered through the micro-channels in the skin, and in combination with a chemical peel it works in a targeted way on texture and evenness of tone. Such combinations also exist as separate items in the price list; the order and spacing of the procedures are determined individually.
Who is the treatment for, and when is it postponed?
Mesotherapy is intended for healthy adults who would like better hydrated, fresher and better cared-for skin, with realistic expectations. Treatment is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the presence of an active infection or inflammation of the skin in the treatment area, cold sores, known hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the product, and with certain systemic diseases – we discuss all of this at the consultation. If you take medicines that affect blood clotting, be sure to mention them.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery is generally short. Temporary redness, a stinging sensation or small bruises may occur at the injection sites and settle over the following days. It is recommended that you do not apply make-up to the treated area for the first 24 hours, that you avoid intense exercise, saunas and sunbeds for a day or two, and that you regularly protect your skin with a sunscreen. Is mesotherapy painful?
The treatment is well tolerated. Very fine needles are used, and if needed a cream containing a local anaesthetic is applied beforehand, so you mainly feel a mild sting or pressure.
How many treatments do I need?
For a more visible and stable result, a course of several treatments a few weeks apart is usually recommended; the exact number depends on the condition of your skin and the goal. The plan is determined individually at the consultation.
When are the results of mesotherapy visible?
Freshness and hydration of the skin are often noticeable after the first treatment, while the quality, tone and texture of the skin gradually improve over the course of treatments.
What is the difference between mesotherapy and biorevitalisation?
The technique is similar, but the composition of the products differs: mesotherapy cocktails combine hyaluronic acid with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, while biorevitalisation products contain a higher concentration of non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid and amino acids. Can mesotherapy be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Mesotherapy is often combined with MicroNeedling, chemical peels, PRP treatment or laser procedures, with appropriate spacing. The combinations and order are determined by the doctor according to the condition of your skin.
