What is hair mesotherapy?
Hair mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure in which micro-needles deliver mesotherapy cocktails rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, enzymes and hyaluronic acid into the scalp, at a depth of just 1-2 mm. The active ingredients reach the hair follicle directly – exactly where the decision is made whether a hair will grow, shed or enter a resting phase.
Mesotherapy as a method was first used in 1952, initially for pain relief, and over time became a standard part of aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine. In hair care it has proven effective both in preventing hair loss and in slowing male-pattern baldness. Among the cocktail ingredients, panthenol, biotin, azelaic acid, zinc and riboflavin stand out for stimulating growth and thickening the hair shaft.
Beyond nourishing the follicle, mesotherapy improves scalp circulation: a faster supply of blood and oxygen means a stronger, thicker and more resilient hair. The treatment also influences the sebaceous glands, reducing excessive oiliness, and it is successfully used for seborrhoea and dandruff.
When is it time for treatment?
Every problem is easier to solve in its early stage. See a doctor as soon as you notice any of these signs:
- your hair is shedding more than before, sometimes in strands – a daily loss of 50 to 100 hairs is considered normal, more intense shedding is not;
- hair grows slowly and is losing density and volume;
- the natural parting is widening, the crown shows through the hair;
- the hair quality is poor – thin, dry, breaking and splitting easily;
- bald patches appear, or the hairline is receding along the forehead and crown.
Why hair falls out – and how we diagnose it
The causes of increased shedding or thinning are many: genetic predisposition, hormonal changes (pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause), stress, health conditions such as diabetes, lupus, polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid disorders, certain medications, infections and scalp conditions. There are also different types of hair loss – androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata (patchy loss), frontal fibrosing alopecia and scarring alopecia – and they are not treated the same way.
That is why diagnosis comes before therapy. We discuss your symptoms, family predisposition, hair-care habits, diet, stress and any medication you take; then we examine the scalp and, when needed, perform trichoscopy – a painless dermatoscopic examination that shows the state of the follicles precisely – as well as laboratory tests (blood count, hormone, vitamin and mineral status). Only once we know the true cause do we choose the therapy. When treatment begins early, success rates are considerably higher.
What does the treatment look like?
The mesotherapy cocktail is injected into the scalp with micro-needles, at a depth of 1 to 2 mm. The treatment takes 15-30 minutes; anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand on request, making the procedure very tolerable. There is no recovery period – you return to your activities immediately. Mild swelling, redness or small bruises on the scalp may appear afterwards and usually resolve within one to three days; a rash or itching occurs less commonly.
Results and number of treatments
The effects of hair mesotherapy include: reduced shedding, stronger hair from the root with more volume, thicker and shinier hair, a nourished and hydrated scalp, accelerated growth of new hairs and regulation of sebum production. In male-pattern baldness the treatment enriches the temples and crown, making the hairline visually denser.
The number of treatments depends on whether we are preventing hair loss and strengthening the hair, or treating loss that has already occurred. The optimal protocol is 8 treatments 7 to 10 days apart; afterwards, one or two maintenance treatments a year are recommended.
Mesotherapy and PRP
Hair mesotherapy is most often applied on its own or combined with PRP hair treatment, where the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma is used alongside vitamin cocktails. The combined approach most often gives the best results in regenerating and stimulating hair growth, and we choose the protocol after examination and diagnostics.
Frequently asked questions about hair mesotherapy
Is hair mesotherapy painful?
Most patients feel only mild discomfort. Anaesthetic cream, applied before the treatment on request, makes the procedure very tolerable.
How many treatments are needed?
Optimally 8 treatments 7 to 10 days apart; to maintain the results, one or two treatments a year.
When are results visible?
Shedding usually decreases during the first course of treatments, while visible density and hair quality come gradually over several months – hair grows in cycles, and the result follows that rhythm.
Are there side effects?
Mild swelling, redness or bruising on the scalp may occur and resolve within one to three days. A rash or itching is less common. Serious complications are rare when the treatment is performed by a doctor experienced in injectable methods.
Can mesotherapy stop male-pattern baldness?
Mesotherapy slows progression and significantly improves hair quality and density, especially when started early, but it cannot completely override genetic influence. In these cases we often combine it with PRP treatment and monitor the condition through check-ups.
