What are collagen stimulators?

Collagen stimulators (biostimulators) are injectable products that prompt the skin to produce new collagen on its own – the protein structure responsible for firmness, elasticity and a youthful appearance. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which add volume instantly and gradually dissolve, biostimulators act on the quality of the skin itself: results build over time and last considerably longer.

In everyday practice, two groups of biostimulators are used most often – products based on poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and products based on calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). Both are biocompatible and biodegradable, but they differ in how and how quickly they work, and therefore in their indications.

PLLA – poly-L-lactic acid (aesPlla and Lanluma)

Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible, biodegradable substance that has been used in medicine for decades. Once applied, it gradually stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen – results develop progressively over four to eight weeks and continue to improve in the following months, with effects lasting up to two years and more. Massaging the treated area after the treatment is recommended, according to the doctor’s instructions.

PLLA is the best choice when the goal is natural, gradual rejuvenation with long-term benefits: full-face rejuvenation, improved skin quality and elasticity, and deep tissue regeneration. At our clinic we use two PLLA products:

  • aesPlla – a collagen booster for the face and body, with gentle volumisation and gradual collagen building;
  • Lanluma – a PLLA biostimulator for the face and body, including contour and volume of larger areas such as the buttocks and hips.

CaHA – calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse)

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a mineral naturally found in the body. In the form of microspheres suspended in a gel (Radiesse), it provides volume and a visible lifting effect immediately upon application, and then continues to stimulate the skin’s own collagen production over the long term. The effect lasts 12-18 months, and post-treatment massage is not required.

CaHA is the best choice when the goal is immediate correction and structural support: the cheeks and cheekbones, the jawline and nasolabial folds, as well as lax skin of the neck, decolletage and hands.

PLLA or CaHA – which one is right for you?

Choosing between PLLA and CaHA – or a combination of the two – depends on your goals, the timeline you want and the condition of your skin:

  • for natural, gradual results with long-term benefits and a duration of up to two years and more – PLLA;
  • for immediate volume and a visible lift, with continued collagen stimulation – CaHA;
  • for both effects at once – a combined approach, which in the hands of an experienced doctor delivers both instant correction and long-term rejuvenation.

Each product has its own strengths, and the most effective plan is determined individually, during the consultation – based on age, facial structure, skin condition and the desired outcome.

What does the treatment look like?

After the consultation and skin assessment, a treatment plan is made. The product is applied using a cannula technique, with anaesthetic cream or a local anaesthetic as needed; the procedure takes about 30 minutes. Downtime is minimal – temporary swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites may occur and resolves within a few days, and most patients return to their usual activities the same day.

How much do collagen stimulators cost?

The price depends on the product, the amount and the treatment plan – see the price list; the exact plan is determined during the consultation after the skin assessment.

Frequently asked questions about collagen stimulators

What is the difference between collagen stimulators and hyaluronic acid fillers?

Hyaluronic acid fillers provide immediate volume that gradually dissolves. Collagen stimulators prompt the skin to produce new collagen on its own – results build gradually, last longer and the skin itself is renewed in quality.

When are the results visible?

CaHA (Radiesse) provides visible volume and lift immediately after the treatment, while the results of PLLA products (aesPlla, Lanluma) develop gradually over four to eight weeks and continue to improve in the following months.

How long do the results last?

The results of PLLA products last up to two years and more, and CaHA products 12-18 months. Duration is individual and depends on the skin condition, the treated area and lifestyle.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is performed with anaesthetic cream or a local anaesthetic as needed and is well tolerated; the procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Can PLLA and CaHA be combined?

Yes. A combined approach achieves both immediate correction and long-term collagen stimulation. Such a plan is made individually, during the consultation.

Can I pay in instalments?

Besides cash, you can pay by Visa, Mastercard or DinaCard. Instalments are possible only if your card and issuing bank support them; ESTERA does not grant or set instalment terms. See Payment methods.
