Acne Scars

Young woman examining her facial skin in the mirror - acne scars and uneven skin texture

Srpska verzija

The acne is gone, but the marks stayed: dents, uneven skin, shadows you see in good light. You do not have to live with it. Scars are not erased in one session, but a series of well-chosen treatments visibly smooths the skin and softens the shadows. At ESTERA we first identify your scar type, then suggest a plan that makes sense for your skin.

Why do acne scars stay?

With deep, inflamed acne the damage reaches the dermis, the collagen layer. The body patches it with tissue of lower quality, leaving tiny dents on the surface. That is why scars are not a surface problem and why one cream does not fix them. The skin needs repeated, controlled stimulation so that part of that tissue is replaced with better collagen.

Which scar type do you have?

  • Rolling and boxcar: shallower, wider dents. These usually respond best.
  • Icepick: narrow and deep. Harder to soften, so the plan is more careful.
  • Red and brown marks after acne: not true scars; they fade faster with proper care and SPF.

Most people have a mix, so treatments are combined.

What ESTERA offers

Scars rarely respond to one method alone — that is why ESTERA keeps the full choice of proven treatments under one roof, and we set the plan after your assessment.

  • MicroNeedling (Dermapen): the base of most plans — controlled micro-injuries stimulate collagen renewal where the scar formed. Needle depth is chosen by scar type and facial area.
  • Advanced MicroNeedling (CELL-DMX): MicroNeedling with CELL-DMX formulas, when the assessment shows your skin needs a stronger regenerative push.
  • Chemical peels: to even out surface texture and tone, often combined with MicroNeedling.
  • PRP: your own growth factors to support renewal, alone or with MicroNeedling.
  • Exosomes (Purasomes): topical protocols that support skin renewal alongside MicroNeedling and peels, without injections.
  • Polynucleotides (PLINEST, NEWEST): biostimulation that improves the quality, elasticity and hydration of the skin around scars.
  • Hyaluronic fillers: for individual deep, depressed scars — a filler lifts the floor of the depression immediately, with subcision when needed.
  • Threads (biostimulatory mesh): a mesh of smooth, absorbable threads placed beneath the scar builds new collagen and lifts the depression from within. Full detail on the new page about threads for acne scars.
  • Laser protocols (Fotona): texture smoothing as assessed by the doctor. More on the laser scar removal page.

Which combination is right for you depends on the scar type: rolling and boxcar scars usually respond best to MicroNeedling, threads and biostimulation, icepick scars need a more precise, focal approach, and red and brown marks are targeted with peels, laser and proper SPF care. You do not have to choose yourself — we set the plan after the assessment.

What does the plan look like?

A realistic result takes a series: usually several sessions a few weeks apart, with combinations matched to your skin. We track progress with photos at check-ups, so you can see the difference yourself. If you have active acne, we stabilise it first and treat scars when the skin is calm.

Scars after injury or surgery

Scars do not come only from acne. Depressed or raised scars after injuries and procedures can be assessed at a visit, and laser smoothing is described on its own page. Keloids (scars that grow past the original wound) are assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions

Can acne scars disappear completely?

It is not realistic to promise that deep scars vanish. Their visibility can be reduced significantly with a series of treatments. The skin looks smoother and more even, and the result builds gradually.

How many MicroNeedling sessions do I need?

It depends on scar depth and age. A series of several sessions a few weeks apart is usual. Needle depth by indication is covered in our article on needle depth.

Can I treat scars while I still have acne?

Not recommended. Acne is brought under control first, and scars are treated when the skin is calm.

Can a home peel replace professional treatment?

No. Home products may help the surface but do not reach the depth where the scar formed.

Which is better: MicroNeedling, a peel or laser?

There is no single best. The choice depends on scar type, skin type and the downtime you can take — and ESTERA offers them all: MicroNeedling and advanced MicroNeedling, peels, PRP, exosomes, polynucleotides, fillers, threads and laser. They are often combined.

Is it painful?

It depends on the method and zone. We adjust comfort to the chosen procedure and discuss it before we start.

How long is recovery?

It depends on the method. Redness is expected, and you get care and sun-protection instructions after every session.

How much does scar treatment cost?

Price depends on the method, zone and number of sessions. Current prices are in the price list, and your plan and price come at the consultation.
