Wrinkled lips at a glance
- What they are: fine vertical lines crossing the vermilion of the lips and their border, with loss of smoothness, hydration and definition
- Causes: loss of volume, collagen and elastin, thinning skin, repeated lip movement, sun exposure and smoking
- Difference: „wrinkled lips“ describes texture and vertical lines on the lip itself; perioral wrinkles cover the broader region around the mouth
- Treatments: a small amount of hyaluronic filler for hydration and definition, skin booster/biorevitalisation and laser resurfacing
- Prevention: SPF lip balm, hydration, smoking cessation and sun protection
How do lips age?
Fine vertical lines across the upper and lower lip are often among the first visible signs of ageing in the lower face. Over time the fat that gives lips fullness decreases, collagen and elastin production slows, and the skin becomes thinner and creases more easily. Every movement – speaking, drinking through a straw, pursing the lips – repeats the fold, while sun exposure and smoking accelerate the process and dry the lips.
Wrinkled lips and perioral wrinkles
These terms overlap but are not the same. Wrinkled lips describes texture and fine vertical lines on the vermilion itself and at its border. Perioral wrinkles cover the wider region around the mouth: vertical smoker’s lines, marionette lines and loss of support around the mouth. That is why a plan for wrinkled lips focuses on hydration, smoothness and definition – not increasing volume at all costs.
Which treatments help?
A small amount of soft hyaluronic filler restores hydration and defines the lip border without an exaggerated increase in size. A skin booster or biorevitalisation improves the quality of thin skin, while laser resurfacing can smooth fine surface lines. When perioral wrinkles are also pronounced, the whole perioral region is treated, not only the lip.
Care and prevention
Lips need daily protection just like the face: SPF lip balm, hydration and avoiding tanning. Stopping smoking is one of the most effective steps because it reduces both repeated movement and chronic drying. Home care is adapted to the treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Does treatment mean my lips will be bigger?
Not necessarily. A small amount of filler can primarily hydrate and smooth the lip, without a visible increase in volume.
How long does the result last?
According to Dr Nenad Stanković’s clinical experience at ESTERA, hyaluronic filler in the lips most often lasts longer than 12 months, depending on the product and metabolism. Skin-quality treatments are carried out in a series.
Can the lines be removed completely?
Fine lines can be significantly softened, but the goal is a natural, smooth and hydrated lip – not erasing every line.
