A baby tooth is removed when decay has damaged it beyond repair, when the permanent tooth has erupted but the baby tooth will not wobble, or when it stands in the way of permanent tooth development. The goal is always the same: remove the problem, keep the space for the permanent tooth.
How we do it: the child first meets the practice and the doctor. The tooth is numbed — gel first, children’s anaesthetic when needed — and removed gently, without force. The procedure takes less time than the story about it. Afterwards the child bites on a gauze and the parent gets clear first-day instructions.
Afterwards: the wound heals within days. If the tooth was removed well before it would have fallen out naturally, we discuss a space maintainer — a small appliance that keeps neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap.

Frequently asked questions
Does extraction hurt?
No — tooth and gum are always numbed first. Afterwards there is usually no trouble at all; if it aches, we recommend a children’s painkiller.
How long is the healing?
A few days; the child eats normally the same day (soft food on the other side).
Should my child eat before the visit?
Yes, lightly — an empty stomach increases fear and discomfort.
What if the baby tooth is loose but the permanent one is already erupting?
Come in — usually removing the baby tooth is all it takes for the permanent tooth to take its place.
