Skin laxity after pregnancy: what really happens and what helps
Pregnancy stretches the skin and shifts hormones, and after birth many women notice that the skin of the abdomen, face or breasts looks looser and „emptier“ than before. Most of these changes recede on their own over months, but not fully – and that is normal. The good news: there are now treatments that encourage the skin to rebuild its own collagen and elastin. At ESTERA in Belgrade we build a plan that respects your body, breastfeeding and the time you actually have.

Skin after pregnancy at a glance
- What happens: skin was stretched for months, and the hormone drop after birth slows collagen renewal – so skin looks looser and thinner.
- What helps: treatments that stimulate your own collagen – Fotona lasers, collagen stimulators, polynucleotides, skin boosters, microneedling.
- When to start: only after postnatal recovery, and some treatments only after breastfeeding ends – determined at the examination.
- Result: gradual, over weeks and months, because the skin builds new support itself.
- Price: see the price list; the plan is confirmed at the consultation.
Why does skin lose firmness after pregnancy?
During pregnancy the skin of the abdomen and breasts stretches for months, and the hormonal shift – high estrogen in pregnancy, then its sharp fall after birth – changes hydration, elasticity and the pace of collagen renewal. On the face this often comes with volume loss, a tired texture and sometimes pigmentation (melasma). These are well-described, physiological changes: your skin has not „failed“ – it is going through a major recovery, like the rest of your body.
What recovers on its own, and what remains?
In the first 6 to 12 months the skin partially retracts by itself, especially with a healthy diet, enough fluids and a gradual return to fitness. What often remains: loose abdominal skin, loss of facial fullness, thinner and dehydrated skin, and changes in the breasts. For these leftover changes, home care alone is rarely enough, because the change sits in the deeper layers of the skin – where creams do not reach.
Which treatments help?
At ESTERA the plan depends on the zone and the degree of laxity:
- Fotona laser treatments – heating of the deeper layers stimulates new collagen; laser tightening of the abdomen is described in our post a firm stomach after pregnancy (Serbian).
- Collagen stimulators (aesPlla, Lanluma, Radiesse) – for gradual, natural rebuilding of support on the face and body.
- Polynucleotides (PLINEST, NEWEST) – for thin, stressed skin that needs quality repair.
- Skin boosters and Profhilo – for hydration, elasticity and glow of the face, neck and décolleté.
- Microneedling – for texture, fine lines and enlarged pores after hormonal shifts.
Stretch marks are a topic of their own with their own approach.
When is the right moment?
The body first needs to recover from birth: in practice, treatments are planned only after the postnatal period and your gynecological check-up, not in the first weeks. Hormonal changes keep influencing the skin for months, so a realistic plan is assessed at an examination, not from a social-media photo.
If you are breastfeeding
During breastfeeding we do not perform injectable treatments (botox, fillers, collagen stimulators, polynucleotides, skin boosters), out of precaution. Some laser protocols and skincare can be considered earlier, but every decision follows a conversation about your health and breastfeeding. A consultation in that period is welcome: we build a plan that waits for the right moment, instead of rushing you.
How much does it cost?
The price depends on the zone, the chosen treatments and the number of visits. See the ESTERA price list for the framework; the exact plan and figure are confirmed at the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after birth can I come for a first consultation?
As soon as you feel ready and after your postnatal check-up. A consultation does not mean a treatment – we agree a plan that respects recovery and breastfeeding.
Will my abdominal skin retract by itself?
Partially yes, within the first 6 to 12 months. If laxity remains pronounced, laser tightening and collagen stimulation can help significantly.
What can I do while breastfeeding?
We postpone injectable treatments as a precaution until breastfeeding ends. What can be done earlier (certain laser protocols, skincare) is assessed individually.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on the zone and the degree of laxity. For laser abdominal tightening, three sessions spaced about a month to six weeks apart are planned on average, by individual assessment.
Do firming creams help?
Good skincare supports the skin but cannot replace collagen renewal in the deeper layers. That is why a plan often pairs home care with treatments.
