Hyperhidrosis at a glance

  • The concern: excessive underarm sweating that is out of proportion to temperature or exertion and interferes with daily life, clothing and self-confidence
  • Mechanism: overactivity of the sweat glands under the influence of nerve signals; botulinum toxin temporarily softens those signals in the treated zone
  • Treatment at ESTERA: application of botulinum toxin type A to the underarm area (axillary hyperhidrosis)
  • Duration of effect: sweating is significantly reduced, usually for 4-12 months, individually

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that goes beyond the needs of regulating body temperature – the underarms are wet even when it is cold, calm and without exertion. Unlike ordinary sweating, it significantly interferes with everyday life: the choice of clothing, handshakes, business situations and self-confidence.

When strong antiperspirants and hygiene measures do not give a sufficient result, medical treatment with botulinum toxin is a proven effective option for the underarm area.

How does Botox reduce sweating?

Sweat glands are activated by nerve signals. Botulinum toxin type A, applied in small points spread across the sweating zone, temporarily softens those signals to the treated glands – the sweat gland simply stops receiving the „order“ for excessive secretion. The glands are not removed or damaged, and the effect is temporary and completely reversible.

The reduction in sweating usually appears within the first week or two after treatment and lasts 4-12 months on average, after which the treatment is repeated as desired.

What does the treatment involve?

At the consultation it is confirmed that the condition is axillary hyperhidrosis, and secondary causes that require a different approach are ruled out. Before the treatment the area is marked if needed, and the botulinum toxin is applied with very fine needles into multiple small points spread across the sweating zone. The procedure takes around 20-30 minutes and requires no recovery.

Who is the treatment for, and when is it postponed?

The treatment is intended for healthy adults with pronounced underarm sweating that does not respond to ordinary antiperspirants. It is postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with an active skin infection in the treatment area, known hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the preparation, and certain neuromuscular conditions. Mention all the medicines you take at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions about hyperhidrosis treatment

How long does the effect of Botox on sweating last?

Sweating is significantly reduced, usually for 4-12 months, individually. When the effect begins to wear off, the treatment is repeated as desired.

Is Botox treatment for sweating safe?

It is a standard, long-established indication for botulinum toxin. The effect is localised and temporary; temporary bruising or tenderness at the injection points is possible.

Will the sweat „reroute“ to other places?

Compensatory sweating is rare with underarm treatments. The body continues to regulate temperature normally through the remaining sweat glands.

Does the treatment hurt?

Very fine needles are used, and the underarm area is well tolerated; a topical anaesthetic cream is used when needed.
